Description

Shakira is one of the few Latin American artists whose career has flourished for decades in both Spanish-language and English-language pop culture. Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll began writing songs as a child and signed her first contract with Sony while still a teenager. Her early albums, *Magia* and *Peligro*, did not bring her international fame, but they helped her develop her own approach to music and songwriting.

Her real breakthrough came with the release of *Pies Descalzos*. Shakira’s music blended pop, guitar-driven rock, Latin American rhythms, and an emotionally expressive songwriting style. Her next album, *Dónde Están los Ladrones?*, created with the involvement of Emilio Estefan, firmly established her among the leading artists on the Latin American music scene. Songs such as *Ciega, Sordomuda*, *Tú*, and *Ojos Así* demonstrated the singer’s broad musical range, from pop rock to music with distinctive Middle Eastern influences.

Shakira’s recognizable voice was not her only defining feature. Her songs combine romantic stories, self-irony, inner conflicts, and observations about the world around her. The influence of Arabic musical traditions is particularly noticeable in *Ojos Así*, reflecting, among other things, the singer’s Lebanese family roots. Middle Eastern dance movements and elements of belly dancing later became an important part of her stage persona.

The global phase of her career began with the album *Laundry Service*. Shakira deliberately improved her English so that she could write new material herself rather than simply translate songs she had already written. *Whenever, Wherever* became an international hit and helped transform a popular Latin American performer into a global pop star. Later, *Hips Don’t Lie*, recorded with Wyclef Jean, topped the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and became one of the most recognizable songs in her discography.

Shakira has never remained within the boundaries of a single genre for long. *Fijación Oral, Vol. 1* and *Oral Fixation, Vol. 2* continued her work in both Spanish and English, *She Wolf* brought her sound closer to electronic and club-oriented pop, while *Sale el Sol* once again emphasized her Latin American musical roots. *Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)*, recorded with the South African group Freshlyground, combined African and Latin American musical elements and became one of Shakira’s best-known hits.

Shakira’s list of collaborations spans several generations of popular music. She has recorded songs with Beyoncé, Rihanna, Carlos Vives, Maluma, Prince Royce, Rauw Alejandro, Karol G, Bizarrap, and many other artists. One particularly notable release was *Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53*, an emotionally direct collaboration with Bizarrap that generated enormous international attention and marked a new chapter in her career.

*Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran* became Shakira’s first full-length album in seven years. It combines pop and reggaeton with rock, Afrobeats, and elements of regional Mexican music, while one of its central themes is the transformation of personal crisis into creative material. The album won the Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Album and confirmed Shakira’s ability to remain relevant decades after her first major success.

Over the course of her career, Shakira has received four Grammy Awards and 15 Latin Grammy Awards. Her influence has long extended beyond recorded music: her performance alongside Jennifer Lopez at Super Bowl LIV became one of the most widely discussed showcases of Latin American culture in the global pop industry.

Charitable work also holds an important place in Shakira’s life and career. She founded Fundación Pies Descalzos, which supports educational projects and children, and has served as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador since 2003. Her cultural significance therefore extends beyond songs such as *Whenever, Wherever*, *La Tortura*, *Hips Don’t Lie*, and *Waka Waka*. It also lies in her ability to bring together different languages, musical traditions, and genres over several decades while remaining a prominent figure in global popular music.
