Bayastan
Bayastan Botokanov belongs to a generation of artists who transformed Kyrgyz-language rap from a niche interest into a prominent part of contemporary popular culture. He developed an interest in hip-hop while still at school. His unusual clothing and desire to resemble international rappers initially drew ridicule from his classmates, but over time, his distinctive style became an important part of his stage persona. Bayastan has said that music allows him to completely disconnect from everyday life and remains a central part of who he is.
One of the most important chapters of his career was his collaboration with Begish and beatmaker Casper. Their album Zamanbap is often described as the first full-length rap release recorded entirely in the Kyrgyz language. The project attracted considerable public attention, while its presentation drew an audience of several thousand people and demonstrated that Kyrgyz-language hip-hop had developed a large audience of its own.
Zamanbap was significant not only because of its choice of language. Music publications highlighted its combination of energetic beats, synthesised melodies, carefully constructed flows and lyrics addressing self-awareness, the future of young people and social responsibility. Tracks such as «Эне тил», «Келечек жаштын колунда» and «Тарбия» demonstrated that rap could remain accessible, embrace a contemporary sound and address serious subjects at the same time.
Bayastan and his colleagues developed a form of hip-hop that does not simply imitate American genre conventions. Their songs incorporate everyday speech, youth slang and modern production techniques, while their subject matter often centres on family, hard work, dignity, language and cultural identity. Bayastan himself has described this approach as a distinctive form of Kyrgyz rap, rooted in local social experience and values that resonate with the Kyrgyz audience.
The next stage of his career was the development of his solo discography. The album Taimanbas brought together ten concise hip-hop tracks and demonstrated the artist’s broader range, from confident rhythmic rapping to melodic songs built around memorable choruses. The album featured Jaya, Shukur Ali, Tamga, Begish, G-Voo and Nurlan Nasip, highlighting Bayastan’s openness to collaborating with rappers, vocalists and mainstream pop performers.
Among the artist’s most recognisable works are «Жарашат», «Сени жактырам», «Зынк», «Салам», «Курал», «Менин келинчегим» and «Балыкчы». His catalogue includes romantic lyrics, ironic observations about everyday life, motivational tracks and songs with social themes. This diversity has allowed Bayastan to remain connected to hip-hop culture while also reaching listeners who generally prefer melodic popular music.
Another important aspect of his work is connected with social initiatives. The song «Теке» encourages young people to pursue their goals and achieve success through honest work, while the projects «Таза жашоо» (“Clean Living”) and «Не продавай голос» (“Do Not Sell Your Vote”) used rap to address environmental issues, civic responsibility and informed decision-making. In these works, the genre becomes not only a form of entertainment but also an accessible way to discuss important social issues.
Bayastan’s influence can also be seen in the changing audience of Kyrgyz-language hip-hop. Researchers of the contemporary music scene note that artists of his generation helped the genre move beyond a limited urban environment and become popular among listeners of different ages and from different regions. His creative journey demonstrates how a local language, a recognisable voice and modern music production can shape an independent musical tradition that remains connected both to global rap culture and to its own cultural foundations.
